About Us

In 2013, with cigar lit and drink in hand, we hatched the idea of starting a brand of cigars that would exemplify the Strength and Freedom that define America. We spent the next five years covering the bases of building a business, while also smoking a lot of cigars, to define what palate our blends would speak to. This journey of taste led us to Tamboril known to many as the “World Capital of Cigars”.
This journey of taste led us to Tamboril known to many as the “World Capital of Cigars”
The Tamboril region hosts some of the finest cigar factories in the world, built around the fields that have grown tobacco for generations. Farming is a science, founded in a love for the land, and nowhere is this more evident than in the fields of Tamboril. As you smoke Fuerte y Libre cigars you will see why farming is so important to the flavor of a fine cigar. The heart of our cigars and our business resides in the fields that grow our tobaccos.
Our original goal was to start production in 2017 but great cigars take time
We expected to have a production factory selected in the Spring of 2017 and finish refining blends and sizes by the beginning of the Summer. In 2017 we selected El Hoyito in the Dominican Republic and after testing and refining multiple blends we started production of our first line, Bodacious, in the late summer of 2018. With a base of Dominican Ligero, Filler and Binder wrapped in Ecuadorean Habano or Maduro leaves, these cigars exemplified what our journey was all about. Smoking Strong and Living Free. Bodacious arrived on our shores with little fanfare but a great deal of pride in May of 2019 and landed at our first retailer, Tobaccology, on June 1, 2019.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, Fuerte y Libre means Strong and Free. We hope you enjoy our cigars as much as we have enjoyed the journey that brought them to your door.

Bodacious

Hand made in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera El Hoyito, these cigars incorporate Dominican Piloto Cubano in the Ligero, Filler and Binder with an aged Ecuadorean Habano or Maduro wrapper. At the start we were trying to recreate the transition from classic Cuban cigars to Cuban seed Dominicans and these are an expression of that journey. Named after a famous bull that no one could ride, these cigars are ready to enjoy in any setting.

Habano

Medium Body/Medium Strength – Pre-light this cigar is elegant with a smooth/tan wrapper reminiscent of saddle leather. At first draw you’ll notice the flavors of Tamboril. A background of field and leather married to a hint of black pepper (there is more pepper here than you might expect from a Dominican cigar), citrus and floral essence. As you hit the second third the pepper fades slightly while white oak, toast and coffee join the party. Some even taste a touch of white sugar. This cigar might get lost in a barrel proof bourbon but finds a ready home when paired with anything 86 proof or lower. For the heartier bunch this goes well with coffee and a view of the sunrise.

Maduro

Medium to Full Body/Medium Strength – Pre-light this cigar is impressive with a dark smooth Maduro wrapper that brings together the best of what Ecuador and the Dominican Republic have to offer. At first light, you’ll be hit by leather, dark chocolate, forest floor and coffee. These flavors will compete for top billing as you burn towards the second third where they begin to work in harmony to increase the body of the cigar. There is some pepper and grassy field here but it remains clearly as a backdrop to the power hitters in this stick. If you are a Scotch fan lean towards Islay as a Highland will be too thin to stand up to this stick. If you prefer an American whiskey choose a bold and higher proof version.

Bushwacker

Hand made in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera El Hoyito, these cigars incorporate well-aged Dominican Piloto Cubano in the Ligero, Filler and Binder with an aged Ecuadorean Habano or Mexican San Andreas wrapper. Working towards a stronger flavor profile than our first line we knew San Andreas had to play an important role. With some experimentation we were able to find a Dominican binder that burned well underneath the San Andreas and created a cigar that is unique to our brand. Named after a famous bull that no one could ride, these cigars are definitely Strong and Free.

Habano

Medium Body/Medium Strength – Pre-light this cigar is impressive with a long aged Ecuadorean Habano wrapper that showcases what time can do to a fine cigar. The following tasting notes include input from Tobaccology customers during a live define the blend event. At first light, you’ll be hit by light pepper on the front and coffee, toast and citrus. These flavors will compete for top billing as you burn towards the second third where they begin to work in harmony to increase the body of the cigar. There is some pepper and what one customer described as the taste of a “sweet Summer Day” and another picked out notes of chicory. As you get into the final third the body and strength intensify and you are left with, as a customer described it “a deep earthiness” If you are a Scotch fan lean towards a Highland. If you prefer an American whiskey choose something under 90 proof with more than 6 years of age as the smoothness will pair nicely with the refined profile of this smoke.

San Andrés

Medium+ Body/Medium+ Strength – Pre-light this cigar is impressive with a Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper that is noticeably lighter in color than many that you see. The refined aging process that creates this lighter Maduro wrapper also smooths out strong flavors inherent in San Andrés tobacco. The following tasting notes include input from Tobaccology customers during a live define the blend event. At first light, you’ll be hit by “umph!” on the front and “coffee, earth and Forest Floor”. These flavors will build as you burn towards the second third where they begin to work in harmony to increase the body of the cigar. The cigar’s strength is also starting to show itself. There is some “sweetness” or as another customer picked out “molasses” in the background at this stage. As you get into the final third the body and strength intensify and you are left with, as a customer described it “a darkness that overwhelms you” another customer described the final third as “It’s Freaking Amazing!” If you are a Scotch fan lean towards an Islay. If you prefer an American whiskey choose something over 90 proof, or your favorite Rye. This is a bit much for most beer but pairs well with stout and porter.

Midnight Bender

Hand made in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera El Hoyito, these cigars incorporate well-aged Dominican Piloto Cubano in the Ligero, Filler and Binder with an aged Mexican San Andrés wrapper. Working towards our strongest flavor profile yet we knew San Andrés had to be the highlight. We used the same Dominican binder found in our Bushwacker line, but added the extra firepower that comes with a Double Ligero blend. Named after the son of Bodacious, these cigars are definitely Strong and Free.

San Andrés

Medium-Full Body/Full Strength – The dark San Andrés wrapper and double ligero provide a little bite even on the cold draw. At first light, you’ll still be tasting the spice and earth from the wrapper on your tongue while the heavy cool smoke is carrying coffee, earth, leather and, interestingly, some grassy field notes that fill your mouth with a reminder of what San Andres stands for. As you work into the first third the grassy field immediately fades and the heartiness of this blend shows its beauty. These flavors will build as you burn towards the second third to increase the body of the cigar to its full potential. If strong cigars make you sweat, you’ll be feeling it about now. There is a refined power in the background as the final third starts, which shows itself as calm and yet dominant. If you are a bourbon fan lean towards a cask strength or Rye as nothing else can stand up to this full strength bull.

Sun Country

Hand made in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera El Hoyito, these cigars incorporate well-aged Dominican Piloto Cubano in the Ligero (double), Filler and Binder with aged Mexican San Andrés wrapper leaf blended into the filler for a little something special. This full body core is then wrapped in a creamy Ecuadorean Shade wrapper to create a balance of flavors that has to be experienced as no words can truly capture what we have done here.  Named after a bad ass bull, the Sun Country will definitely brighten your day.

Ecuadorean Connecticut

Medium Body/Full Strength – At first glance this cigar should not be a part of a brand called Strong and Free. The creamy Shade wrapper screams mild cigar but it is hiding a big secret. The core of this cigar was designed to surprise you with its double Dominican Ligero and aged Dominican Filler and Binder we have amped it up just a bit by blending some Mexican San Andrés Wrapper leaf into the filler. This creates a full bodied and full strength core that is wrapped in that mild creaminess. We know you will enjoy this one as many have exclaimed that it is our best blend yet.

Second Wind

Hand made in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera El Hoyito, these cigars incorporate well-aged Dominican Piloto Cubano in the Double Ligero core, enveloped in a classic Dominican Filler and Binder and then finished in an Ecuadorean Habano wrapper. While the blend is not far fetched, what makes this cigar special is its connection to the land. You see the Second Wind is a one farm cigar, with all of the core tobacco grown on the same 40 Hectare plot in the Cibao Valley.  It is this uniqueness that will make this a regular part of your cigar experience.

One Farm – One Factory – One Family

Ecuadorean Habano

Medium Body/Medium Strength – As we were working towards this blend we knew we were creating it for our second anniversary release. We wanted it to be special and to show people where we were headed as a company. We are still learning but this is what we know so far . . . A good cigar is made with good tobacco and a great cigar is made with great tobacco. We think this is a great cigar!

Avalanche

Hand made in the Dominican Republic at Tabacalera El Hoyito, these cigars incorporate well-aged Dominican Piloto Cubano in the core, and are finished with an Ecuadorean Connecticut wrapper. For over 2 years I worked on this blend while trying to add a true mild cigar to the line. In the end we found much more complexity in our final version and it now rests at Mild-Medium. The slight pepper from the wrapper highlights the beauty of the Dominican filler and binder taking you places you would not expect from your grandfathers Connecticut.

Ecuadorean Connecticut

Mild-Medium Body/Mild Strength – With 24 months to prepare we created something special for you. Not really a mild but with the creaminess that Connecticut is know for. Not really a Medium but with some spice to point you in that direction. This has become a morning smoke for most of the tasting crew but it also it a great cigar to end the evening with. This pairs perfectly with coffee in the morning and if alcohol is your think, a Lager or a Pilsner works well. Add this to your line-up and enjoy!
